Top 10 T-Pop Songs of 2023 (Rank 10-1)

If you haven’t, please do check out the Honorable Mentions and other features I wrote for this year!

Top 10 T-Pop Songs

10. 4EVE – Tears

4EVE started their year with a spring break-up anthem. They have a stacked vocal line that is barely utilized. Tears finally put the skills into use, including vocals of members with rapper roles. Ballads are amazing when they go all out with a striking finale, and this is the best example this year.

9. Badmixy – DILF feat. Yui Yatyer

Badmixy, while an influencer, is building her name as an artist through her debut album. The lead single DILF feels like trolling (the lyrics are literally about… sugar daddies), but the song holds so much replay value that it is actually genuinely good. The version on streaming sites has more vocal layers which improve the song so do give it a try there.

8. MXFRUIT – Strawberry Ice Cream

MXFRUIT came through the gates swinging right from the debut. Strawberry Ice Cream is a solid synth-pop song with a (very) catchy chorus, with every element perfected. While not in the song itself, the harmonizing scene in the music video is iconic and builds the unique image of the group.

7. Bamm – Close Enough

To be honest, Bamm’s 2023 rollout isn’t the best, with lopsided singles that deviated from their signature sound. Luckily, Close Enough redeems and closes the year on a good note, pun intended. Bamm continues to sing their heartbreaks out, this time in the form of a pop-rock anthem.

6. Jeff Satur – Dum Dum

Unlike many of the tracks on this list, Dum Dum is a song built on vibes first, with other elements surrounding it. The main character here is the unsettling ambience of the first verse contrasted with the anti-drop. This is quite unique for T-Pop and even Jeff Satur himself. I would definitely like to see more of this.

5. BUS – Because of You, I Shine

Because of You, I Shine is a rare occurrence in T-Pop, both the group and song. You don’t ever see T-Pop having a group that has 12 members, and the song is a ‘throw everything into a blender’ approach. There are many pieces attached together that would easily break apart without a strong chorus, but it all somehow works so well.

4. Fourth Nattawat – Rock & Star

Rock & Star sees Fourth become a rockstar. Technically an OST sung by an actor, Rock & Star still has all the characteristics of a solid Thai band song: nostalgic, compelling, and emotional. It’s very reminiscent of Thai school bands that play in every graduation ceremony or prom night, and that nostalgic feeling really makes up the song.

3. QRRA – Miracle

Miracle is a testament to how important catchy melodies are in T-Pop. Despite what I would call generic production, the song stands out with its flawless double-punch chorus, successfully establishing a sophisticated, sleek sound. I hope they do reach the heights of their past lineup LYRA.

2. 4EVE – Life Boy

Referencing a Y2K-era Thai slang, Life Boy blends Thai melodies seamlessly with upbeat tropical house to create a festive atmosphere. 4EVE members also get into character and redefined their bratty image here. Above all, the highlight lies in the dance break where everything is all out at once.

1. Youngohm – Thatthong Sound ft. Sonofo

On rapper Youngohm’s latest album, Thatthong Sound stands out with its infused Thai-folk EDM. I’m using the advantage of the blurred lines in Thailand on what is considered pop music, just because this song is insane.

Thatthong Sound is clearly intentionally unserious. Everything about this song is nothing but fun. There is rock, rap, hip-hop, electronic, mor-lam. The rap verses are fire, but what sealed the deal is the minute-long instrumental breakdown. There’s definitely a reason why this song became a cultural phenomenon.

2023 T-Pop Overview

2023 is yet another solid year for T-Pop. The roster is expanding exponentially at this point. We have promising rookies like MXFRUIT and BUS entering the scene, and popular groups like 4EVE, PiXXiE, and Bamm solidifying their statuses. There are also a lot of other acts who did not make it here that have released amazing songs as well.

T-Pop is currently in the status of re-building itself, and a lot of characteristics are starting to solidify: the reliance on catchy choruses, the R&B influence, and simple straightforward storylines. With all of this in mind, the more upbeat poppy songs immediately stand out, and that is reflected in my Top 10 countdown as well.

Up next will be the K-Pop songs countdown, so please stay tuned.

Notes

The 555 Reviews is (finally) back!

I am currently going through a lot of things during my last year of high school, but regardless, these few days before 2023 is done will be used for recapping what T-Pop and K-Pop offered this year. The 555 will have another year end ranking! While I didn’t pay attention to every single critically acclaimed release, my rankings will definitely be reflective of what my favorites this year are. If a song you think is excellent isn’t here, it is either because 1) I have not listened to it yet or 2) I simply don’t like it.

2023 Overview

As time passes, I think my interest in music has slightly shifted. If I’m being honest, some of the artists/groups that used to wow me slowly went down my favorites list, while some newer acts sparked my interest instead, and kind of replaced that empty space. It’s especially hard when it all totally depends on my music taste, which is very volatile. I might end up not streaming the music of a certain artist much often when I feel like their stuff is not up my alley anymore, which is totally natural and happens all the time, but it still feels a little weird looking back.

Onto the good things, I definitely gained some new favorite groups that I am enjoying, and look forward to what they bring to the table for 2024.

New Favorite Acts

Sakurazaka46

(I know they are not new.)

Sakurazaka46 technically stayed for a much longer time than everyone else on this list, but I became a huge fan musically just this year. I rarely listen to J-Pop beyond 48 groups, but their singles run this year was incredibly strong, and their B-sides are also solid. I would say they successfully rebranded themselves and made their own name.

Favorites: Start Over!, Sakurazuki, Cool, Seijyaku no Boryoku, Mamoribito

Zerobaseone (ZB1)

This one is quite unexpected, as I never watched one bit of Boys Planet, but their music direction seems very good for a survival show temporary group. I like their take on the drum ‘n bass sound. They also have a very stacked vocal line.

Favorites: In Bloom, Melting Point, Take My Hand

The Wind

It feels like forever since we’ve had a boy group doing songs this heartwarming, so The Wind immediately stood out to me. It’s nothing deep, just straightforward bright smiles.

Unfortunately, some sad news of the group came not long ago, with main vocalist Jaewon leaving. I hope the members can continue with this music direction, and everyone involved is doing well.

Favorites: Summer Vacation, Sirius, We Go

MXFRUIT

With only 4 songs, they are a rare great example of quality over quantity. Their focus on harmonizing has a lot of potential and I hope they get more opportunities to utilize that. Strawberry Ice Cream is and will always be a banger, but they’ve also released three more amazing songs this year, for both the teary eyes and head-bopping crowds.

Favorites: Strawberry Ice Cream, I’m Here, Get To Know Me

Favorite Music Videos

aespa – Drama

Drama is simply a very consistent video. I love how different ways the black-red color combination is used throughout the video. The revolving car lights and mirrors are also simple elements but are used very effectively. Pair this video with the song itself and it becomes an insane audio-visual experience.

tripleS – Girls’ Capitalism

Girls’ Capitalism is a great example of how to craft a concept without having to create a deep storyline. The introduction of different ‘rules’ makes a nice transition into a new scene and is something viewers look forward to as the video progresses, keeping their attention. There are also a lot of funny iconic moments without distracting you from the song.

New Discoveries

Aside from new songs, there are also a lot of older songs that I discovered this year and loved, especially Japanese songs, as I am still trying to dive into music of this country.

NMB48 – Must Be Now

After BNK48 announced the release of their rendition, I gave the original one a try. This is amazing! It is exactly what I would expect from a Japanese EDM song in a good way. The relentless energy of 2010s pop was really something else and I wish that sound would come back into trend again someday.

Back Number – Tegami

This is my new favorite Back Number track. It slightly feels like a Christmas song but vague enough to be associated with anything wintery. I like how heartwarming. The music video on the other hand is tear-jerking, but it is indeed beautiful.

Now let’s have a look at this year’s Top 10 T-Pop honorable mentions!

Top 10 T-Pop 2023 (Honorable Mentions)

15. PiXXiE – Dejayou

A continuation of their superstitious fairies concept. The chorus could use more variety, but this song is clearly made to become a hit. It is indeed an earworm.

14. CGM48 – 2565

This was released at the very end of 2022, but the song is too good to be ignored. 2565 feels like a winter breeze at the mountaintop, perfectly encapsulating the image of Chiang Mai.

13. ATLAS – Mangosteen

Out of everything ATLAS released this year, Mangosteen is *that* song. They are fully committed to the song and the concept that you can’t help but bop to it.

12. MXFRUIT – I’m Here

I’m Here roughens the edges a bit compared to their debut, adding more character to the group. If you like some fun drum ‘n bass, this is the song for you.

11. PROXIE – Hurting

PROXIE have earned the title of heartbreak anthem kings. While their singles mostly stay on the low-tempo side, Hurting is my favorite for its synth-rock sound.

NEXT: Rank 10 – 1

Song Review: MXFRUIT – Strawberry Ice Cream

T-Pop is alive and in full force, and MXFRUIT is another girl group to join the ever-expanding T-Pop industry. They might be another case of blurring lines between what makes a T-Pop group ‘T-Pop’, or what makes (insert letter)-Pop group truly belong to that category. Strawberry Ice Cream is their debut song, fully in English, and with the members’ natural pronunciation this could totally pass as a western girl group track.

Strawberry Ice Cream is a synth-pop song driven by a constant beat. The structure of the song goes by the textbook. It’s just a totally inoffensive song, but in a landscape where everyone is bringing out bombast and shock-value, Strawberry Ice Cream ends up being the refreshing one instead. The hooks are simple but very effective, putting the chorus right at the very first seconds makes total sense because that’s the part everyone is going to hum along. It just has that energy of a hit song to come.

Judging from the music video and their live performances, MXFRUIT seems to be positioning themselves as a harmony-focused group. That’s one unique calling card they have right from debut.
